Today marks 14 years of Taylor Swift in the Music Industry



It's 19th June 2020 and it's been 14 years of Taylor swift releasing Tim Mcgraw as the lead single from her self titled debut album, Taylor swift. 

Throughout her career the singer-songwriter has always inspired, influenced and helped people in different ways and in 14 years she has not only conquered the whole world but also shattered and set records. Her name will forever be remembered and she is still thriving. 

WHAT HAS TAYLOR SWIFT CHANGED IN THE INDUSTRY?

Today we will be listing some her contributions to the society and industry. 


1. Making country music worldwide popular:

When the first single love story, from the songstress's sophomore album fearless was released it gained attention throughout the world. The self-written song is one of the classic country hits of past two decades. 

In 2013, Country Music Association honored Taylor Swift with the 'Pinnacle Award', Country music's highest recognition for bringing country music to YOUNGER audience and for achieving INTERNATIONAL prominence that's unique in Country music.

Taylor swift is the youngest country artist to be honored with the country music 'Pinnacle Award'.



2. Country-Pop influence:


After her first 3 pure country albums, her 4th album RED was released. It was full of country mixed with pop sounds.
- "For decades, there's been an ebb and flow in country music between traditional sounds and pop," Chris Parr, Country Manager told Billboard. "Taylor has certainly helped to push that pop boundary out a little bit further."

The Pop influenced country music made young country artists explore this sound.

Billboard writes that "the country landscape is much different today, thanks in part to Swift and her insistence on following a game plan that many considered unorthodox" and noted the favorable views toward the genre since her debut.
3. Younger artists got signed in country music:


- Billboard reported that following Taylor Swift's rise to fame, labels have increasingly become interested in signing young Country artists and singers who writes their own music. Two of the examples according to them are Kacey and Hunter Hayes.


4. The songwriting influence:



Critics could not believe how a young 16 year old girl would write such hit songs alone. So to prove them wrong swift wrote her entire album alone with no co -writers. It is the first full self-written album to sell 1 Million sales in just a week. Many artists in both country and pop started contribution in the songwriting process.Taylor's songwriting has inspired new artists like Halsey, Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello, Conan Gray, Kelsea Ballerini, ed sheeran and many more.

She is the most successful billboard 200 songwriter of this century.


Taylor Swift is the most-successful country singer-songwriter since Dolly Parton and has the most Hot 100 Top 10 hits as both singer and songwriter.

Rolling Stone opined that, because Swift "worked so hard at speaking her truth" through her lyrics, she "helped opened up a space" for many female artists to "seem so effortlessly themselves" in their music in an era of tabloids.

Grammy-winning producer Jack Antonoff credited Taylor Swift for kick-starting his career as a producer. Artists like Adele, Halsey, Paul McCartney, Niall Horan, Finneas O'Connell, Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding and more has been very vocal of how Taylor and her songs inspired them.

5. Social Media influence:


In 2018, Taylor swift made her first political post on Instagram against the republican senate candidate Marsha blackburn. After her post there was a spike in voter's registration with 64,000 new voters registering for the mid-term election. She has been the most followed person over all social medias. 

She was the first country artist to use social media platform to promote her work. 
- In 2008, Big Machine used an aggressive marketing campaign in which it promoted Taylor Swift as "the first bona fide country superstar of the Myspace generation". She's the first Country artist that fully adopted to social media marketing.

6. Crossover to Pop:



With her 5th album 1989, Taylor crossed her country genre to finally explore pop. It was stated as the most riskiest move by an artist as she would lose her country fans. But she did not lose fans because even in her pop album she had that relatable songwriting which she has always had.

1989 is known as one of the best eras and albums in pop. And it is the most awarded pop album of all time. 


Her album 1989 is credited for boosting traditional album sales in the era of streaming. It is also noted to have popularized crossovers from other genres to pop, without having to adapt to urban sounds. It's often cited as an example for a commercially successful crossover.


7. Musical influence:


Besides from her songwriting, her using multiple instruments have also influenced many upcoming new artists.
2018 study found that roughly 50% of new Fender guitarists are women. The renowned musical instrument company, Fender, is coining this trend the "Taylor Swift" effect. Swift is considered one of the artists who resurged ukuleles in modern music.


Taylor Swift has been credited with boosting the popularity of Polaroids by featuring one of the instant photographs in the cover artwork of her album 1989.


8. Artist's rights:


Taylor swift has been vocal about rights of big and small all artists in the music industry.

  • Taylor Swift represented artists' right to compensation in 2014 and made Apple change their policy. According to TIME, thousands of artists made sure that their songs are available on Apple Music after they promised to pay them with right royalties.
  • After years of bad blood, Spotify CEO Daniel EK reportedly promised Taylor Swift that they will pay all the remaining unpaid royalties of artists on Spotify in exchange of her catalogue. According to reports, Spotify settled $21 MILLION unpaid royalties after Swift's return.
  • In 2019, Taylor Swift signed a global deal with Universal and Republic that secured a guarantee from the label that any sale of its Spotify shares would result in non-recoupable payments to all artists on its roster and will never have unpaid or underpaid royalties from streams.
  • Her fight for her first six albums' master recordings has been the highlight of music debates and is the most high profile and arguably the biggest master recordings controversy in music's modern history.

9. Society:


1.Taylor Swift asked her Instagram followers to register & vote and shortly after that Vote.org reported massive spike of voters registration towards entire America and called it "The Taylor Swift Effect".

2. Taylor Swift made a petition on Change.org for the passage of "Equality Act" and since accumulated 750k signatures and White House responded to it multiple times. Nancy Pelosi , Corey Booker, Katie Hill, Elizabeth Warren are among the politicians who supported her.

3. In 2012, Michelle Obama recognized Taylor's philanthropic efforts, including her contributions to youth-related charities, environmental conservation and U.S. tornado and flood relief efforts in the U.S with "The Big Help Award".

4. Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights' "Ripple of Hope Award" was given for demonstrating commitment to social change and passion for equality, justice, basic human rights, and his belief that we all must strive to "make gentle the life of this world."

5. Governor Mark Dayton proclaimed August 31, 2018 as "Taylor Swift Day", praising her as "a positive influence on her fans through her example of truthfulness, grace, extensive philanthropy, and strength of character".

6.After moving to New York, NYC & Company proclaimed Swift as New York City's Global Welcoming Ambassador because of the spike in its global searches due to Taylor Swift's song "Welcome To New York".

7. Taylor swift is vocal in the Black Lives Matter movement and is constantly educating her fans and donating.

8. She privately donates to her fans who are in need of medications, education and financial family problems.

9. She has donated millions of dollars to flood and tornado reliefs throughout the country.


She has been named the Artist of the decade (10s) and the woman of the decade due to her constantly pushing the boundaries, huge success in sales and touring and being vocal about change in the industry.
